After a week instructing my Estonian visitor Toomas on fly fishing my guests this week were from Somerset and wanted to cover mainly freshwater angling with a little sea kayak fishing thrown in for good measure. Father and son, Chris and Lee, were eager to visit as many venues as possible during their stay and sample the stunning Murcian scenery and nature they had heard about. Monday arrived and we had a day at Embalse de Argos. The old favourite came up trumps as usual, providing Carp and Barbel throughout the day. Tuesday and we ventured to the beautiful Valle de Ricote where the Segura flows down through the reservoir at Blanca surrounded by breathtaking rock formations edged with a steep mountain backdrop, home to many rare bird species. My guests marvelled at the nature present and Lee, in fact, spent more time sketching than fishing. It is always good to meet fellow anglers who have an interest in nature, as I am sure many do, especially younger people who appreciate wildlife as a whole and want to preserve nature for the future. Preserve Nature is in fact the slogan of one of my sponsors, Grauvell, the major Spanish fishing equipment manufacturer who have, for a long time, led a catch and release and minimum size campaign aimed at their customers throughout the world.
After the inland beauty of Valle de Ricote my guests had a complete change on Wednesday as we headed off to the coast south of Mazarron for a few hours kayak fishing and some spinning for Bass from the shore. It would be fair to say that Chris did not take too well to the kayak. Even though the Mediterranean was flat calm, he felt a little queasy and decided to shore fish. This was, I think, more to do with the barbeque we had the night before when we had all been entertained by Campo Kitchen supremo Sharon Bruce and husband. The drink had flowed to be fair and some form of suffering was inevitable. Anyway Lee and I had a great time out at sea catching many species that Lee had never come across before using a simple rig set up and worm bait. My guests were becoming increasingly interested in the area as it is tranquil and unspoilt by modern development……..at the moment! For Thursday I had saved my trump card and took them to Embalse de Alfonso XIII. If you have visited this reservoir then you will know what I mean when I say “silence is deafening” Chris and Lee did not want to leave the place. We had been provided with some good fishing and the scenery was, as usual, something to behold. Friday morning and we had a whistle stop tour to see the famous guns at Tinoso and a quick look at the finer points of Cartagena’s long history. Then off to the airport and off they trotted back to Blighty. They are coming back, obviously. Lee had many sketches still to finish and Chris had many fish still to catch! They have in the past travelled extensively looking for that special place for a fishing break and it gave me great pleasure to hear Chris on the phone to his wife back home telling her they had found it.
